February 14, 2009 Meeting and Technical Session

Mark Schneider and Richard Mayor
Mark has owned his Healey forever. The car has been a constant companion, a source of many parking lot discussions, and a reliable means of transport. As the vehicle sits in our garage today the odometer reads 118,541 miles. This fact coupled with a second fact, i.e., the engine and transmission have never been out of the car for rebuild completely astounds Richard Mayor. Richard believes that the engine must be tired, that rings are suffer blow by, and valves fail to seat properly. The best way to find out is to conduct a couple of standard engine tests. Specifically, a compression check and a leak down test. Mark’s Healey car will serve as the guinea pig for the tests during a technical session on Valentine’s Day.
The compression test requires removal of the spark plugs and measuring the ability of each piston to compress the cylinder’s volume of air and fuel. The leak down test pressurizes each cylinder with air and the measures the ability of the rings and valves to sustain the pressure over time. Richard’s hypothesis is that Mark’s engine will sound like a bad air mattress with air leaking out of valves or around piston rings. The tests require specialized equipment. The interpretation of the results require knowledge and experience. From many years of racing Austin Healeys Richard Mayor has both. Mark may learn that he is the banker for the final outcome of the tests. Join us and cheer on Richard or Mark, your choice.
We will conduct these tests as a technical session as part of the February club meeting. Join Richard, Mark, and Mark’s Healey in Richard’s garage on Saturday February 14, 2009. Richard’s home and garage are located at 1511 – SW Broadway Drive . The technical session will begin at 10:30 AM and run until 12:30 PM. Richard’s garage is a tribute to the ultimate “car guy”. However, please make note that we will be in the garage for the entire session. Therefore, comfortable shoes and a warm jacket will be the uniform of the day.
After the technical session the formal February business meeting of the Austin Healey Club of Oregon will take place at the Buffalo Gap Saloon & Eatery located at 6835 – SW Macadam Ave. The business meeting and lunch will begin at 1:00 PM and continue until we are done.
A map to Richard’s address and to the Buffalo Gap is shown below. Click the link below the map and driving directions to the Buffalo Gap will appear. Richard’s address is indicated by the Green pointer “A”, the Buffalo Gap is found at green point “B”.
