1955 LeMans disaster
Photo of 1955 LeMans start sent to Tom and Skip Monaco from their French Healey friends. Lance Macklin is the driver of Healey number 26 which is involved in the crash.
Below is a video on race disasters (including the 1955 LeMans) with Macklin discussing the accident. Macklin comes on the video at 3:24.

The photo is particularly interesting because it shows the #20 Mercedes 300S, the other car involved in the crash, driven by Pierre Levegh both at the start and at the time of the crash, just above the #26 Austin Healey 100S, driven by Lance Macklin. Also very evident in the photo are the earthen berm, the proximity and density of the spectators, and the lack of other safety barriers, all of which contributed to the tragic consequences of the crash. Other cars you can see are the #19 Mercedes 300S, driven by Juan Manuel Fangio; #21 Mercedes 300S, driven by Karl Kling; #22 Cunningham C6-R, driven by Briggs Cunningham; #25 Aston Martin DB3S, driven by Tony Brooks; and #30 Gordini T20S, driven by Jacques Pollet. None of the cars in the photo finished the race. You also may recognize some of the co-drivers for these cars, who included include Les Leston (#26), Stirling Moss (#19), and John Fitch (#20).
