June 25, 2001 – The last Saturday of June Kent Lambert is holding an open house at his new building in Odell, OR near Hood River, OR. The building is two stories tall. The ground floor is configured as single and double car garage/storage areas. The upper floor is the new home of the Weaving groups that Judy was so active with. The open house will run from 1:30-4:00 PM but Kent said anyone driving up from the Healey Club may come early and grab a good parking sport. The address of the building in Odell (south of Hood River) is: 3399 – Odell Highway. The new building is located directly behind Gehrig’s Chevron, 3387 – Odell Highway.

Healey Racing Report from Doug Escriva

The Sonoma Historic Motorsports Festival attracts some of the most prestigious vintage race cars from all of North American with 400 entered for the 2011 enent. My race group included ’55-’62 production GT cars of all makes and models: http://www.generalracing.com/attachments/193_SatGrps4Web.pdf The warm California weather I was expecting didn’t materialized as it rained all 4 days of the event. Racing in this field with some of best vintage drivers in the game I felt some what at home on the wet Sears Point track qualifying 2nd out of 30 cars. On Sunday’s main our group was the first out as it start to rain once again. As the green flag dropped and I climbed the hill entering the very technical sweeping off-camber turn # 2 I was passed by an incredibility fast ’59 Morgan (the eventual race winner) and the ’59 Sebring Sprite of Seattle billionaire Bruce McCaw. I re-passed McCaw in the Sprite on the following lap and started to settle in on making consistent laps while holding down solid 3rd place. With one lap to go while over taking 3 slower cars I moved off the dry race line and started to brake to set-up my turn-in for the up coming hairpin turn. My car suddenly hydroplaned and at that point I was merely a passenger as my car and I were no longer racing that day.

Video of Saturdays Qualifing race: http://youtube/wwP7UyjvUMY

Editor’s Note: Be sure you check out the website pdf file Doug identifies in the first sentence above. It includes some great dshots of race machinery including Doug’sd Healey, # 414. Then check out the youtube video of the rainey conditions at Sonoma. Once you get on the youtube site it should also provide you with a string of other clips of racing activities. Sone are with Doug and others are just cool racing videos and sounds. If you are a gearhead it will be well worth the time spent to watch a few of the videos. If the gearhead title is you, turn up you speakers.

June 27 – July 1, 2011 Austin-Healey Club USA Rendezvous at the Heathman Lodge in Vancouver, WA. Hard to imagine two Rendezvous meets in our own backyard in consecutive years. You can get the details of the schedule and plans on the Cascade Club website at: Cascadeahc.homestead.com.

July 3 – 8, 2011 Austin-Healey Club of America Conclave at Colorado Springs, CO.
Why not make 2011 a double header? After attending Rendezvous in Vancouver
let’s go on to Conclave in Colorado Springs. Picture the Conclave car show at
the Air Force Academy on the 4th of July! Dwight Jones of the Cascade Club has developed information on shipping Healeys from Vancouver to Colorado Springs via Passport Transport (see Gary Anderson’s article on page 33 in the October-November issue of Austin Healey Magazine). The cost is not cheap but you have to figure that it’s going to cost $200.00 a day to drive anyway and it will be a brutal three day drive to get there on July 3. And there are some pretty cheap airfares to be had to Denver. Shipping cost is $5500.00 each way for a full load of 6 cars. That’s $916.67 per car each way. If the group wants to do a more leisurely drive back west the cost is only one way. Cars would be delivered back to Vancouver.

If interested, please contact Dwight Jones at: dwightbj8@msn.com<mailto:dwightbj8@msn.com> or 509-545-9735.

AHCO Business
Saturday morning January 8, 2011 the AHCO Coard of Directors met for a productive meeting. The purpose of the meeting was to work through a number of “beginning of the year” topics, eg., the 2011 Activities Calendar, discuss projects and Board member assignments, etc. The meeting generated a couple of jobs for which the Board of Directors seeks member assistance:

Sunshine Person - The Board was seeking a volunteer to take on this job for the 2011 calendar year.

I am pleased to annouce that Judy Carter has volunteered to becomeour new Sunshine Lady. Thank you, Judy.

Jan Whittlesey has filled the Sunshine Lady position for quite awhile and decided to step down. Thank you, Jan. We have appreciated your help.

The two All British Field Meet (ABFM) positions are also appointed. Dick Lenahan has agreed to continue with the job as the event Registrar for 2011. We are asking for a member to step up and take the other position, i.e., the vote counter/scorer of the Popular Car Show ballots on the Saturday of ABFM weekend. The job entails recording the votes on the Excel spreadsheets developed by Jeff Mach and reporting the results to the ABFM leaders. Thanks to Jeff I now have the Excel program and Jeff has offered to train the appointee.

Please contact any one of the Board members to volunteer to take on these jobs.

Our February tech session will be at Loyning’s Engine Service at 9125 SE 64th Ave.,Portland,OR 97206.Arnie Loyning is restoring a BN2 like the first Healey of his youth. Sound familiar? He is opening his shop for us on a Saturday to give us an idea of the services they have been providing for many years especially to the racing community. They take in and rebuild engines from all over the US mostly from race teams and individuals who race. Richard Mayor and Doug Escriva our two Healey competitors have both used Loyning’s. They have several guys who just rebuild engines and do machining. Another person, Doug, handles working on whole cars and doing the chassis dyno runs. Doug said he could do one or two cars on the dyno for us. We will tour the facility and see the engine dyno and learn all about the advantages of these tests. If you have never seen a dyno run you should not miss this opportunity. My car has never run so good since I had it done. Further details will follow.

Plans for this year’s All British Field Meet are proceeding apace and it’s now time to start signing up volunteers to count the Popular Choice votes on Saturday. We need about 20 people for the task, which will occur between 10:30am and 2:00pm. This year, it’s especially important to volunteer if you attend the Meet, because unfortunately, I’m expecting we’ll be without several members who have volunteered in the past. If you haven’t actively worked for the Club lately, this is a good opportunity to do so without a lot of pain or stress. And, for your efforts, we’ll provide you with lunch and cold drinks, and a coveted ABFM Worker Bee t-shirt. If the weather is like it was last year (heaven forbid), you’ll have a dry spot to hang out, and if it’s broiling outside, you’ll be in the shade. How can you lose? The ABFM is one of the Club’s largest annual income sources, but it depends on us doing our jobs to make the ABFM happen. Please sign up to volunteer by leaving a comment to this post, at the Club meeting on Saturday, or email or call Jeff Mach (details in the Club directory). Don’t forget to tell me what size t-shirt you want. Remember, ABFM registrations are being posted on the website, so I know whether you plan to attend. Don’ make me send Guido over to visit you next month if you don’t also sign up to volunteer. Thanks.
