June 27 – July 1, 2011 Austin-Healey Club USA Rendezvous at the Heathman Lodge in Vancouver, WA. Hard to imagine two Rendezvous meets in our own backyard in consecutive years. You can get the details of the schedule and plans on the Cascade Club website at: Cascadeahc.homestead.com.

July 3 – 8, 2011 Austin-Healey Club of America Conclave at Colorado Springs, CO.
Why not make 2011 a double header? After attending Rendezvous in Vancouver
let’s go on to Conclave in Colorado Springs. Picture the Conclave car show at
the Air Force Academy on the 4th of July! Dwight Jones of the Cascade Club has developed information on shipping Healeys from Vancouver to Colorado Springs via Passport Transport (see Gary Anderson’s article on page 33 in the October-November issue of Austin Healey Magazine). The cost is not cheap but you have to figure that it’s going to cost $200.00 a day to drive anyway and it will be a brutal three day drive to get there on July 3. And there are some pretty cheap airfares to be had to Denver. Shipping cost is $5500.00 each way for a full load of 6 cars. That’s $916.67 per car each way. If the group wants to do a more leisurely drive back west the cost is only one way. Cars would be delivered back to Vancouver.

If interested, please contact Dwight Jones at: dwightbj8@msn.com<mailto:dwightbj8@msn.com> or 509-545-9735.

AHCO Business
Saturday morning January 8, 2011 the AHCO Coard of Directors met for a productive meeting. The purpose of the meeting was to work through a number of “beginning of the year” topics, eg., the 2011 Activities Calendar, discuss projects and Board member assignments, etc. The meeting generated a couple of jobs for which the Board of Directors seeks member assistance:

Sunshine Person - The Board was seeking a volunteer to take on this job for the 2011 calendar year.

I am pleased to annouce that Judy Carter has volunteered to becomeour new Sunshine Lady. Thank you, Judy.

Jan Whittlesey has filled the Sunshine Lady position for quite awhile and decided to step down. Thank you, Jan. We have appreciated your help.

The two All British Field Meet (ABFM) positions are also appointed. Dick Lenahan has agreed to continue with the job as the event Registrar for 2011. We are asking for a member to step up and take the other position, i.e., the vote counter/scorer of the Popular Car Show ballots on the Saturday of ABFM weekend. The job entails recording the votes on the Excel spreadsheets developed by Jeff Mach and reporting the results to the ABFM leaders. Thanks to Jeff I now have the Excel program and Jeff has offered to train the appointee.

Please contact any one of the Board members to volunteer to take on these jobs.

The Austin-Healey Club of Oregon Healey was very well represented in Group 1 racing by member Doug Escriva. The following gives Doug’s final placing in the race heats for the Labor Day event:

Saturday……….. Heat #1……….Finished 2nd

#2……………………4th

Sunday……………Heat #1……………………3rd

#2…………………….1st

Monday…………..Heat #1…………………….1st

#2…………………….1st

The two racing pictures above were taken during the second heat on Sunday. My camera was on the outside of Turn 2 at the chicane. The left-most picture was taken well into the race. The red car had been leading the pack up to this point. As can be seen in the shot, Doug is all over the red car. Doug had worked hard and raced smart to get to this position. The middle picture was taken the next lap. Doug had passed the red car and was now leading the pack and finished the race that way. The red car then retired with a serious brake problem. The problem was likely caused by the severe pressure Doug and his 210 hp Healey with 220 ft lbs of torque were applying. The 2nd and 3rd place cars in this heat were also Healeys. Oh! BTW, if you hadn’t noticed, the red car is a Ferrari!!! Good on ya, Doug. That was one of the most exciting races I have seen at PIR. It is too bad Doug couldn’t hear the cheers and whistles from the grandstands when he was flying, hair on fire, sliding through the chicane after passing the Ferrari. Forthcoming Acrtivities

The Nomination Committee will consist of:

Past President Jeff Mach

Executive Board Member Jack Jakobsen

General Member Allan Gross

Jeff will arrange meetings of the Committee as necessary to generate a slate of nominees to fill the Club offices. Nominations for officers will also be accepted from the floor during the October general meeting, providing those nominated agree to serve prior to the nomination. The Secretary will post the slate of candidates on the website and develop a ballot when the Nominations Committee completes its task. The President will appoint a Club member as an election official. At least two weeks prior to the November Club meeting the election official shall postal mail a ballot to each Club member with instruction to return the completed ballot to the official by a specified date. Ballots will be counted only if received by postal mail prior to the deadline or delivered in person to the official at the Club November meeting. Ballots will be opened and votes tallied by the election official at the meeting.

Historically, the annual efforts of the Nominations Committee can be a bit of a struggle. Their challenge is to find Club members willing to dedicate time and effort to supporting Club direction, decisions, planning, activities, etc. If you have given some thought to helping your club I encourage you to contact one of the three members of the Committee. You can find their telephone numbers in the Club Directory.

This year’s Club officer nominating committee of Jeff Mach, Jack Jakobsen, and Allan Gross are seeking Club members who want to run as candidates for the Club offices of:

President Vice President

Secretary Treasurer

Activities Director Regalia Director

Membership Director Advertising Director

The responsibilities of these positions are described in the Club’s Bylaws, which is available online here. There are no prerequisites for holding an AHCO office, except that the President must have previously been a member of the Club’s Executive Board. The position of Advertising Director may or may not be continued in 2011. The Club’s Executive Board recently decided to suspend the activities of the Advertising Director pending a review of whether their position should be continued and if not, membership approval of such a change to the Club’s bylaws.

The Club bylaws encourage regular changes in members serving as Club officers and a club like ours survives and prospers through the active participation of its members. I encourage all Club members to consider running for one of the Club officer positions to help guide the Club and keep it vital in 2011. For all you members who have served as officers in the past, thank you, but please consider becoming a officer candidate again also.

If you wish to nominate yourself or someone else (with their concurrence, please), contact Jack, Allan, or I. You can find telephone and email contact information for us in your membership directory. In addition, nominations for office will be solicited at the October general membership meeting. Voting will occur in November.

Thank you for your consideration of this request.

Activities
Portland Historic Races, July 9-12
The 2010 Baxter Auto Part Portland Historic Races, July 9 – 12, 2010 held at Portland International Raceway, features an annual entry list of more than 250 prestigious historic race cars, representing a wide variety of manufacturers. The restored cars are divided into groups according to make, age and horsepower, where they are raced at high speeds close to or at their full potential. This year the featured marque is Alfa Romeo. Boasting an open paddock, the Portland Historic Races allow enthusiasts the opportunity to see race cars up close and interact with the drivers and crew. The event also features a display of more than 700 collector cars and hot rods, a food and wine pavilion, a kid zone, an autocross, and a vendor midway.

In past years the Austin-Healey Club of Oregon has had 15 or more member cars in the car club static display corrals. These numbers have dwindled in recent years to less than a half dozen last year. I believe this is partially due to the cost of $45.00 for registration. Certainly that is a sizeable amount of money to spend just to park your car on the grass and be part of the show. On the other hand it provides you with two tickets for each of the event days, total access to the pits, concessions, food vendors, and grandstands.

A final reason to attend the Historics is the car club parade laps. The picture is the Schneider Healey coming out of the corner and onto the front straight. Another factor seems to be concerns for locating the car club corrals inside the race course. Many participants complained the first year the corrals were moved to this location. We all felt trapped until the race day ended and the race course could again be crossed. The PIR officials heard many complaints about this and now allow passage between race heats. About every 20 minutes throughout the day the race course is closed, the gates are opened and collector cars can freely pass in or out of the corral area. I encourage the AHCO membership to join me at the Historic Races this summer. I don’t think I have missed the event in over twenty years and have grown to love vintage racing. Additionally, we have several AHCO members that will be racing their Healeys and will appreciate our cheering them on. If I have convinced you to join me please send a check for $45.00 to the AHCO Activities Director John Carter in the next week to ten days. John needs to file the registrations and fees with the PIR event by June 1, 2010. The mailing address to use is 16173 – SW Dekalb Street, Portland, OR 97224.
June12, – The tour and AHCO members meeting will be hosted by Wanda and Michael Hartfield. We will meet at the former Sherwood GI Joes parking lot on Hwy 99 (sort of behind the McDonalds). Meeting time is 10:00 AM. The tour will depart at 10:30. The tour will be approximately 60 miles in length and pass through the Dundee, Amity, Dayton vicinity with a stop at the Amity Vineyard Winery where we will enjoy a sampling of the wines. There is a $5.00 charge for the wine tasting. We will continue the tour on to the Hartfields home for lunch and the meeting There will be a short Executive Board meeting prior to the general membership meeting. the later meeting will start at 3:15 PM. Please notify the Hartfields if you plan to attend so they can plan the food. Michael and Wanda Hartfield may be reached by phone at 503-476-3202 or by email at hartfiel@alumni.princeton.edu.
June 28-July 2, Rendezvous – The registrations for the Austin-Healey Club USA Rendezvous hosted by the AHCO have now reached a total of 87. If you are planning to attend and have not yet registered please do so very soon.

July and August Events
Mark your social calendar for a Healey Club event on Saturday, July 17 for a tour and picnic. Details will follow.
On Saturday, August 7th we are planning a joint event with the Cascade Club for a BBQ and tour in Morton,WA. Staying overnight will be optional. Details will follow.

I attended Barret Jackson Las Vegas a few weeks ago and thought my fellow AHCO members would like to see some of the pics. Could you post these pictures to the site? Our very own John and Robert Wilson of Healey Lane Restorations were there selling a very nice black ’62 BT7. Although Healey prices seemed fairly consistent- it looked like you could get a pretty good deal on muscle cars and hot-rods vs. a year ago.

Also here is a Youtube link of the actual auction- for those watching it on Speed Channel it was interrupted by a commercial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92VZK0_6YuE

Austin Healey Northwest Meet 2009

‘Nestled in the heart of Oregon’s beautiful wine country, McMinnville is Oregon at its best. There are numerous scenic roads and beautiful vistas as well as the charming downtown area. You can enjoy delicious wine tasting, explore downtown shops or just have fun on the meandering Healey roads.’ I could not come up with a better description than John Carter’s of the site of the 2009 Austin Healey Northwest Meet. We arrived Thursday afternoon after a beautiful trip down Hwy 99 from Portland. The sky was blue, and the temperature was a perfect 75 degrees. Registration and socializing took place in the parking lot reserved for us, and at 5:45 we lined up the Healey’s for our first planned event, dinner at Golden Valley Pub and Brewery. Located in McMinnville’s historic downtown district, Golden Valley is well known for their outstanding beers, premium local wines, comfortable environment and delicious food. There were 44 of us seated in our own room where we enjoyed fabulous beer, wine and repast. We returned to the motel after dinner and continued to socialize in the Hospitality Room provided by the Red Lion Inn.
Friday was a ‘free’ day to explore on your own or pal up with others and go wine tasting, stroll through the Historic Downtown area, visit the beautiful campus of Linfield College or tour the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum. More Healeys arrived over night and more came in the morning, so we knew we would make quite an impression as we all ventured about the area. Larry and I opted to go to the Museum, knowing there was a new building recently opened totally dedicated to Space Flight and Exploration. We spent the morning touring the Aviation Museum, including a tour of a B-17 bomber and of course, the world’s largest wooden airplane, the ‘Spruce Goose’. After lunch and a glass of Spruce Goose Pinot Gris, we continued our tour of the Space Museum. There we were able to visit the Titan II Launch Room and view a 5 minute launch simulation. We returned to the motel to socialize in the parking lot again (the weather could not be finer), and learn where everyone else had gone and what they had seen. We were still getting new arrivals around 3:30 which marked the beginning of the Slot Car Races. Denis and Jan Saxon hosted this event with help and the round robin began! 36 cars raced, 4 at a time. With expert guidance from Denis, we all had a grand time with 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winning a bottle of local wine and a ‘medal’. John Carter and his ‘Idleometer’ started making the rounds at 4:00 and with the help of George Koeber, tested the idles on any Healey whose owner was brave and confident. John Carter created this ‘Rube Goldberg’ like machine which records the roughness or smoothness of your idle. We had quite a few test but the results won’t be in until tomorrow night to allow more testing in the afternoon. We all convened in the Hospitality Room for a buffet of appetizers including fruit, veggies, cold cuts, cheeses, meatballs and dessert. It was a great spread and while you were in line, you could check out the Healey-Feely bags.
On Saturday, after our daily continental breakfast provided complimentary by Red Lion, we all assembled in the parking lot. Jan Whittlesey and Glen Enright were our guides on a road tour of the surrounding area. What an incredible drive! Through farmland, foothills, vineyard and nurseries, we wound around, arriving in Carlton at 11:00 to roam around the shops, taste wine if you were inclined, or just sit on a bench and watch rest of us take a break. We saddled back up at 11:45 to caravan to Laurel Ridge Winery where we tasted wine and ate our picnic lunches overlooking vineyards. Our hosts did their best to accommodate such a large crowd and all had a good time. After lunch, some of us headed back to MAC, some continued wine tasting at Willakenzie Winery up the road. We all gathered back at the parking lot at 4:00 for socializing, testing your idle with John Carter’s Idleometer and general relaxing after a Healey tour day. At 5:45 we saddled up again for our Authentic Texan Barbeque at the McMinnville Senior Center. The theme was Western and quite a few brave souls dressed accordingly. It was fun to see the cowboy hats and boots, skirts and turquoise! We had an excellent dinner catered by Buster’s Authentic Texan Barbeque! After dinner, we returned to the motel for awards for ‘games’, raffle and door prize drawings, and socializing in the Hospitality Room. I think the first awards were given for ‘Oil Stains’. A sheet of brown paper was placed under your Healey for a period of ½ to 1 hour. Then Gary and Jan Jackson announced the winners; ‘Most Oil’ went to Phil Daniels, ‘Least Oil’ went to Michael DeWilds and ‘Most Artistic’ Oil Stain went to Dennis Saxon. The next awards were given for the Idleometer test. Tom Magnuson(45pts.) won a run away first place, John Stevens(70pts.) won second place and Michael Hartfield took third with 74pts.. And the two winners of the Questions to the Answer were Bruce and Sue Jackson for first place and Susan White for second place. Final awards going to winners of the Slot Races were Michael Hartfield with first, Bob Poague with second, and Doris Johnson won third. The Healey-Feely contest was won by Lynn Martin. Then we learned the raffle winners. We had an amazing array of items for raffle and all were very pleased with their winnings. A good time was had by all. We had a total of 108 people registered from Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, Idaho and even one couple, Terry and Patricia Bancroft from Sydney, Australia (they were driving the beautiful metallic green Cougar!). We had about 40 Healeys of various makes. All that were left were the good-byes in the parking lot on Sunday morning and promises to ‘See you next year!’ at the 2010 Austin Healey Northwest Meet at Lake Chelan!

Thanks to all who helped make this a wonderful event, especially John and Judy Carter, George and Jackie Koeber, and Glen Enright and Jan Whittlesey.
Also, many thanks to Kym Randolph for writing this article.

ORP held their first public opening on Saturday 9/28. Having neglected my ’65 BJ8 street car during the vintage racing season it was a nice opportunity to stretch it’s legs on the 2 1/2 hour drive to the Grass Valley track. I was impressed with the group that is behind this very ambitious endeavor, they appear to have a good long range plan for this wonderful new NW road race course. Though it’s a little out of the way, any die hard racer will have no problem camping on site for any event planned for this venue. I enjoyed the 2 parade laps even if I couldn’t open her up too much. http://www.oregonraceway.com/track_sched_news.php
