The Aircooled crowd has been wringing their hands over this for a while now.

Charles Navarro has an excellent article on the topic on his Website (http://lnengineering.com/oil.html) and is well worth the read.

The basic summary is the SM oils may or may not contain enought ZDDP to protect older, flat tappet engines from premature wear. Ther are oils out there that contain enough ZDDP but you may or may not find them at your local parts store.

While some of the vendors appear to have recognized the need for high ZDDP oils, their marketing departmants have been very UNforthcoming with real data. Instead they offer mostly marketing hype and constantly changing formulations with little or no notice to the customer. I for one do not want to patronize these outfits.

Congratulations on your inventive solution to the vexing problem of being asked to drill holes in your beloved Healey. My own car, a BN4 100-6 resides in Cape Town, South Africa, although I actually live in ireland, and only get to 'visit' the car for about 4 months of the year. You are entirely correct about the limited space in the trunk (boot as we call it) mine is almost entirely taken up with the spare wheel and jack. I've contacted Multi-Craft Plastics, taking the easy option of asking them to make me a copy pair of your brackets, if not possible your clear instructions and photographs should make manufacture fairly straightforward. Did you get the original luggage rack from Moss, and were they able to supply the additional set of shorter rear legs you show in Figure 3? Any way, well done on this thoughtful solution.

Patrick,
Thanks for your inquiry. Unfortunately, the Portland ABFM won't be honoring the 50th anniversay of the Sprite in 2008. As a Sprite owner myself and as one of the AHCO's representatives on the ABFM committee, I made a pitch for it. However, some years ago and before my time on the committee, the committee members decided to rotate the honored marque among the primary British marques, with every other year being devoted to a marque still in production (e.g., Jaguar). There wasn't sufficient interest on the committee in deviating from that formula this year.

Another aspect of choosing the honored marque that the committee takes into consideration is how many of the honored cars participate in the ABFM. Again unfortunately, Sprites (and even Midgets) aren't brought in large numbers. Last year, we had 13 Bugeyes, 10 later Sprites, and 11 Midgets - which wouldn't be many for an honored marque.

I'm going to see what I can do to mark the occasion at the ABFM, like perhaps posting a banner in the Sprite area or on the Club's tent.

A question, an important one, at least to me and most likely all Sprite/Spridget owners. Is the Portland All British Field meet going to do anything to honor the 50th anniversary of the Sprite? Many times in the past at the meet there have been dual marks honored will this be done? It's going to be another 50 years before the next real big one and I won't be around.
Sincerely,
Patrick.

Mark,
I remember the trip well. I lost a starter bolt just as we arrived in Walport, and had to run down to the Napa store for a bolt. You have done a great job modifying your luggage rack. I don't like drilling holes in my Healey that don't belong either. JIM
