September Mark’s Memo

ABFM – SOVREN Racing Report: Not Bad for 50 Year-old Sports Cars Group 1 of the Society of Vintage Racing Enthusiasts (SOVERN) includes Austin_Healeys. The Austin-Healey Club of Oregon Healey was very well represented in Group 1 racing by member Doug Escriva. The following gives Doug’s final placing in the race heats for the Labor Day event:

Saturday……….. Heat #1……….Finished 2nd

#2……………………4th

Sunday……………Heat #1……………………3rd

#2…………………….1st

Monday…………..Heat #1…………………….1st

#2…………………….1st

The two racing pictures above were taken during the second heat on Sunday. My camera was on the outside of Turn 2 at the chicane. The left-most picture was taken well into the race. The red car had been leading the pack up to this point. As can be seen in the shot, Doug is all over the red car. Doug had worked hard and raced smart to get to this position. The middle picture was taken the next lap. Doug had passed the red car and was now leading the pack and finished the race that way. The red car then retired with a serious brake problem. The problem was likely caused by the severe pressure Doug and his 210 hp Healey with 220 ft lbs of torque were applying. The 2nd and 3rd place cars in this heat were also Healeys. Oh! BTW, if you hadn’t noticed, the red car is a Ferrari!!! Good on ya, Doug. That was one of the most exciting races I have seen at PIR. It is too bad Doug couldn’t hear the cheers and whistles from the grandstands when he was flying, hair on fire, sliding through the chicane after passing the Ferrari. Read more »

Seeking Candidates for 2011 Club Officer Positions

This year’s Club officer nominating committee of Jeff Mach, Jack Jakobsen, and Allan Gross are seeking Club members who want to run as candidates for the Club offices of:

President                                 Vice President

Secretary                                  Treasurer

Activities Director                      Regalia Director

Membership Director                 Advertising Director

The responsibilities of these positions are described in the Club’s Bylaws, which is available online here.  There are no prerequisites for holding an AHCO office, except that the President must have previously been a member of the Club’s Executive Board.  The position of Advertising Director may or may not be continued in 2011.  The Club’s Executive Board recently decided to suspend the activities of the Advertising Director pending a review of whether their  position should be continued and if not, membership approval of  such a change to the Club’s bylaws.

The Club bylaws encourage regular changes in members serving as Club officers and a club like ours survives and prospers through the active participation of its members.  I encourage all Club members to consider running for one of the Club officer positions to help guide the Club and keep it vital in 2011.  For all you members who have served as officers in the past, thank you, but please consider becoming a officer candidate again also.

If you wish to nominate yourself or someone else (with their concurrence, please), contact Jack, Allan, or I.  You can find telephone and email contact information for us in your membership directory.  In addition, nominations for office will be solicited at the October general membership meeting.  Voting will occur in November.

Thank you for your consideration of this request.

Forthcoming Activities

Club members who participated in the Rendezvous and have been attending meetings have already heard about and experienced a high level and quality of activities due to the efforts of our Activities Directors, John Carter and George Koeber.  The next couple of months are not to be missed.  Check out the following:

The Meet is held on Labor Day Weekend. That will be Friday through Monday of Labor Day Weekend. Starting Friday evening and continuing for the next three days there will be plenty of fun activities: Meet and Greet Parties, Vintage Races, Land Rover Adventure rides, and photo competition, vendors, plus over 800 vehicles!  We have enough volunteers to count popular car show votes but we can always use more.

It’s That Time of Year Again! Sign Up to Volunteer at ABFM!

Plans for this year’s All British Field Meet are proceeding apace and it’s now time to start signing up volunteers to count the Popular Choice votes on Saturday.  We need about 20 people for the task, which will occur between 10:30am and 2:00pm.  This year, it’s especially important to volunteer if you attend the Meet, because unfortunately, I’m expecting we’ll be without several members who have volunteered in the past.  If you haven’t actively worked for the Club lately, this is a good opportunity to do so without a lot of pain or stress.  And, for your efforts, we’ll provide you with lunch and cold drinks, and a coveted ABFM Worker Bee t-shirt.  If the weather is like it was last year (heaven forbid), you’ll have a dry spot to hang out, and if it’s broiling outside, you’ll be in the shade.  How can you lose?  The ABFM is one of the Club’s largest annual income sources, but it depends on us doing our jobs to make the ABFM happen.  Please sign up to volunteer by leaving a comment to this post, at the Club meeting on Saturday, or email or call Jeff Mach (details in the Club directory).  Don’t forget to tell me what size t-shirt you want.  Remember, ABFM registrations are being posted on the website, so I know whether you plan to attend.  Don’ make me send Guido over to visit you next month if you don’t also sign up to volunteer.  Thanks.

August 7th Tour and Meeting

This is a joint tour with the Cascade Club.  We will meet at the Burger King at Delta Park @8:30 a.m. with departure at 9:00.  We will tour to Morton, Washington where we will meet the Cascade Club.  You will want to bring a picnic lunch for our lunch break.  We will have a short meeting during the lunch stop.  At the end of the tour we will arrive at Phil and Becky Daniel’s for a pot luck dinner.  Please bring a dinner course as shown:  Last name A-E bring Salad or Bread; F-K bring Vegetable or Appetizers; L-P bring Potato or Pasta; Q-Z bring Dessert.  Bring your own drinks.

You are invited to stay over and enjoy a train ride at Elbe, Washington on Sunday. We will be stay at the Seasons Motel in Morton. Phone (360)496-6835.   200 Westlake Drive    The rooms are $80-$90.

July 17th Tour and Meeting

We will meet at John & Judy Carter’s house at 16173 S.W. Dekalb St., Tigard, at 8:30 a.m.  The tour will start at 9:00.  We will tour to Bald Peak State Park where we will enjoy the view with coffee and “sweets”.  From there we will  tour to Carlton where we will have a picnic at Wennerberg Park where we will play and compete in some “lawn games”.  The meeting will be at 2:30.  You may bring your own picnic lunch or you may purchase lunch at the nearby Deli in Carlton.  Directions to the Carter’s home – Hwy 99 to Bull Mountain Rd. to 161st  Ave.  Turn East to Dekalb, turn right on Dekalb to address.  Call if you get lost (503) 579-6599.
